the future of seo content

AI is moving super fast with hundreds of products launching each day.

Recently I was on the Digital Marketer Podcast to talk about the future of SEO content in the era of AI, particularly how overwhelmed digital marketers out there can learn how to adapt their SEO content strategy instead of getting lost in a sea of AI content.

The Digital Marketer Podcast is a weekly show hosted by its President, Mark de Grasse, a business strategist with a wealth of experience in content development, digital marketing, and brand management.

You can listen to the podcast episode here, or scroll down to read a detailed summary of what we talked about.

Table of Contents:

As I’ve always said, I see AI as an opportunity to make an impact in the content marketing space. What it allows people to do is spend more time on other meaningful tasks like promoting their content to drive traffic and awareness instead of spending so much time creating that content.

Before AI, you had to hire a writer that specializes in your niche. You needed someone who really knows fashion or health or science.

With AI, the machine knows everything because it has access to billions of points of data on the Internet.

You can now create content for industries that are historically complex like engineering or aerospace even if you don’t have any experience in those fields.

What is Content at Scale?

When we launched Content at Scale back in September, it was designed to be as simple as putting in a keyword that you want to rank for, and the AI writing platform will provide you with a publish-ready article out of the box.

Now, with Content at Scale 2.0, you can upload a YouTube URL, a podcast episode link, a custom audio file, and even the URL of your competitors’ blog posts to create a fresh article. It’s not a transcription or a summary but a whole new article based on the same topic.

What Was the Development Cycle for Content at Scale 2.0?

Hundreds of AI products are launched every day. Over 1,000 AI tools came out in March alone!

Most of these AI companies just take OpenAI’s API and sell a service for $20/month — which Mark thinks is just an opportunistic way to cash checks — whereas Content at Scale is in its second year of continuously perfecting its machine so that it does what it is supposed to do really well:

Write long-form, SEO-driven, high-quality content.

From the very start, Content at Scale was built for scaling long-form, SEO-focused content. It’s the perfect version of all those article spinners that we used a decade ago to try to scale content. It’s the dream tool for every digital content agency.

Around December 2021, we were the first company to openly talk about offering content services with the help of AI while others were trying to be discreet about it.

Immediately we sold around $30,000 per month but could not sustain it because the AI clearly wasn’t ready.

Back to the drawing board!

We decided to push the service aside and focus on the technology. We had a form that captured all the feedback from cancellations, rebuilt the entire core, and started putting together everything we needed to take the app to the next level.

Finally, on September 2022, we launched Content at Scale as a SaaS product.

It brought in $50,000 in its first month and just kept rolling since then.

By January, we were already working on our next major update which came out in April.

From its humble beginnings as a simple AI writing tool, Content at Scale has now transformed into an advanced AI-driven content creation solution that helps businesses grow their online presence.

Why We Kept The Beta Label

As Mark mentioned, nothing is worse than going into a brand that looks polished and finding out that it’s not.

We kept the beta label for two reasons:

  1. It tempers expectations: Obviously, there are going to be UX issues, bugs, and things that don’t work right when you launch a product. People are going to be more accepting of these issues if they know they’re early adopters of your app.
  2. It encourages feedback: I notice that people are more forthcoming with feedback when the app is in beta mode, and feedback is key to making your product truly great.

Can You Use ChatGPT to Write Content?

Yes, you can write content with ChatGPT, but it won’t be a very good article. Most of the time you need your editor to take it apart, rewrite it and verify sources.

With advancements in natural language processing, AI-powered tools like ChatGPT have become capable of producing coherent and engaging articles that cater to various content formats. These technologies not only save time but also help businesses scale short-form content.

The biggest issue with ChatGPT and similar chatbots is that they sometimes make up quotations and statistics.

How can you create meaningful, long-form content that doesn’t leave you scrambling to verify sources and check hallucinatory AI facts?

Content at Scale has cut that back dramatically. It crawls the top of Google to find ranking content and uses natural language processing to develop relevant keywords.

With Content at Scale 2.0, you get professional-grade long-form content, complete with anchor texts and backlinks to credible sources.

Fact-Checking AI Content

Maintaining factual accuracy is crucial for building trust and credibility among your target audience. And while AI-powered bots like ChatGPT have come a long way in generating high-quality content that mimics human writing styles, factual accuracy has become a real issue.

Here’s what you can do to maintain the integrity of your content:

  • Create guidelines: Establish clear guidelines on what information should be included or excluded from generated content based on industry standards and best practices.
  • Edit before publishing: Review all AI-generated pieces thoroughly before they go live to ensure they meet quality benchmarks and adhere to established guidelines.
  • Maintain transparency: Be transparent with your audience about using AI-generated content while emphasizing your commitment to providing accurate information.

Here at Content at Scale, we’ve developed a system for fact-checking, building trust, and generally improving the quality of your AI content before it goes live. It’s called the C.R.A.F.T. framework.

There Are Better Ways to Spend Time Than Creating Content

The things that we’re working on now, and what we’re releasing soon, are all designed to make content creation easy.

For marketing heads and business owners, this means more time to focus on your SEO content strategy and more time to distribute and promote that content.

We’re helping shift where that time is spent, not necessarily wiping out jobs and replacing human writers.

For one, writers should already be adapting to technology. And two, start using that time to promote that content and build their brand.

If you already have a content strategy and are doing it consistently, you’re already ahead of 95% of your competitors.

But now, not only do you have a strategy, but you’re going to execute all of the content instantly.

With AI, you can do it in 10 minutes instead of 3 to 10 hours.

Now you can talk to more customers. You can do more events. You can interact with more people through social because you’re not worried about your blog deadline on Monday or the newsletter on Tuesday.

Updating Content with AI

Everyone’s so focused on creating new content, but what about updating your old content?

You probably have a blog article that used to perform well but has dropped to Page 2 or 3 because there are new articles that are ranking higher. You could use AI to update or repurpose that old content — something you likely would not have the time to do otherwise.

Nobody wants to spend 10 hours writing an article. With AI, you can publish 5 in the same amount of time.

Publish 50 and take the top 5 that’s been gaining traction and go back and optimize them with a video or podcast to make them stand out.

It’s all about freeing up your time for tasks that matter more — like testing your content with different audiences and finding out if it’s worth it for you to spend more time on that content or create something in a new category that people are interested in.

By covering a topic in-depth, you can start building authority in that niche.

Building Topical Authority

One example of how we built topical authority is our AI detector which has been a huge success and is now on Page One. Anytime someone searches for AI detection, Google knows that we’re an authority on that subject. Now, we can branch off of that and talk about AI content and other related things.

We were the first company to focus on undetectable AI content. There were early concerns about what the consequences would be if Google detects that content was written by AI. It was something I was also concerned about before we launched Content at Scale.

So how did we ease people’s concerns and overcome that objection?

We started building layers on top of the AI that would circumvent that and become undetectable.

What Does Google Say About AI Content?

While some may be concerned about how Google views AI content in terms of SEO content, recent developments from the company suggest they are open to embracing these innovations as long as they contribute positively to user experience.

Danny Sullivan, Google’s Search Liasion, has stated that if AI-generated content provides value for users and meets their needs better than existing alternatives, then there should be no issues ranking it within search engine result pages (SERPs).

Three things you have to keep in mind when publishing AI content:

  1. Meet EEAT guidelines: Google rewards content that demonstrates Expertise, Experience, Authoritativeness, and Trustworthiness.
  2. Create valuable content: Focus on generating informative pieces addressing relevant topics or answering common questions within your niche.
  3. Maintain quality standards: Ensure your AI-generated content is well-written, engaging, and factually accurate to provide a positive user experience.

Building topical authority with AI-generated content is a powerful tool that can help your business stay ahead of the competition. As we look to the future, generative text technologies will revolutionize search engine dynamics and create entirely new opportunities for automated writing solutions.

What’s Next for Content at Scale?

We have some really cool stuff currently in the pipeline. One is a Shopify plugin that integrates seamlessly with a Shopify store. We’re also improving our multi-language support — which currently only does translation— to enable the app to write in any native language.

AI Gives Us the Opportunity to Market Better

The future of SEO content in the era of AI is both worrisome and exciting. With AI continuing to advance and become more integrated into our lives, it’s clear that it will have a significant impact on how we create, optimize, and enjoy content for search engines.

Natural language processing and machine learning are already revolutionizing the SEO landscape by reducing the amount of time spent on writing and allowing marketers to focus more on promoting and building their brands.

As content creators, we’ll need to focus even more on producing relevant, valuable, and user-friendly content that truly connects with our audience — even when that content is written by AI.
